# Naspers and VK: loss of influence and the later share renunciation

**Question.** Was the investment merely impaired or actually relinquished?

**Answer.** The records distinguish the earlier accounting treatment from a November 2022 agreement renouncing shares and shareholder rights for no consideration. Historical network links do not imply a retained current holding.

## Impairment, lost influence and eventual renunciation are different events

- Analysis: Mail.ru, later VK, appears in older Naspers portfolio records. The primary FY23 Prosus statements distinguish losing significant influence during the year ended March 2022 from a November 2022 agreement to renounce all VK shares and shareholder rights without consideration. - Qualification: An accounting write-down or loss of significant influence does not by itself establish a legal share disposal. Here the later renunciation disclosure supplies the separate exit event. A journalistic comparison between Avito and VK’s Youla service does not establish common ownership after Avito’s sale.
  - Outcome: The older VK holding is retained as historical, with the November 2022 renunciation disclosed beside it.
