# Peter Carlsson and Northvolt: leadership, workplace investigation and responses

- Also known as: Peter Mikael Carlsson

**Question.** What do the records establish about Carlsson’s role and the reported investigations?

**Answer.** Carlsson’s historical leadership is documented. Reported workplace and financial allegations require separate treatment, with the defence response and the prosecutor’s later denial of a charging report retained.

## A leadership history, rather than a presumption of liability

- Analysis: The 2023 annual report identifies Carlsson as Northvolt’s chief executive, co-founder and director. It describes his earlier procurement and supply-chain roles at Tesla, NXP Semiconductors and Sony Ericsson. Those prior jobs explain professional experience, without establishing that the former employers owned Northvolt or shared responsibility for later events. A November 2024 official briefing records his subsequent CEO departure while remaining a director at that point. [s-d5] [s-d121]
- Documented: The 2023 report describes Carlsson’s earlier supply-chain and procurement leadership at Tesla, NXP Semiconductors and Sony Ericsson. Cerruti’s biography likewise records earlier Tesla supply-chain and Renault Nissan purchasing roles. [s-d5]
  - Qualification: These professional biographies do not establish ownership or responsibility for Northvolt’s later events by those former employers.
- Documented: The same briefing records Northvolt AB’s US filing on 21 November 2024 and the company’s position that the Canadian project would operate outside Chapter 11, though it would be delayed. It records Peter Carlsson stepping down as CEO while remaining a director at that stage. [s-d121]
  - Qualification: Exclusion from the parent’s Chapter 11 did not prevent later Canadian proceedings.

## Fatal accidents and the company’s stated response

- Analysis: Northvolt’s report describes two fatal accidents at Ett in 2023: an employee incident in a downstream facility and an NCC-engaged construction worker’s accident outside the production buildings. It says production stopped for two weeks after the first accident and that an internal investigation prompted changes to training and routines. These remedial statements do not settle legal responsibility. [s-d5]
- Documented: Northvolt’s 2023 report disclosed two fatal accidents at Ett: one involving an employee in a downstream facility and another involving an NCC-engaged construction worker outside the production facilities. The company said it halted production for two weeks after the first accident and changed training and routines after an internal investigation. [s-d5]
  - Qualification: The company’s account and claimed corrective steps do not determine legal responsibility for either accident.
- Analysis: In June 2026 reporting, Carlsson’s lawyer contested the prosecutor’s account of his operational involvement and said the defence would seek expert opinions and further investigation. A later June 24 report quoted the prosecutor denying reports of an intention to charge Carlsson and saying there was nothing new. The charging report must therefore be read with that correction. The correction is also not evidence of an acquittal or the investigation’s closure. [s-d223] [s-d271] [s-d307]
- Attributed: June 2026 reporting described an investigation concerning Carlsson and a former Northvolt manager in connection with the 2023 fatal workplace accident. Carlsson’s lawyer disputed that he had directed operational details and said the defence would seek substantial additional investigation and expert evidence. [s-d223] [s-d271] [s-d307]
  - Qualification: An investigation or a prosecutor’s reported expectation is not a charge or a finding of guilt.
  - Response: The defence challenged the prosecutor’s account of Carlsson’s operational role.
  - Outcome: On 24 June, subsequent reporting quoted the prosecutor denying the report that he intended to bring a charge and saying there was nothing new. That denial does not itself establish that the investigation was closed.
- Attributed: On 24 June 2026, a later report quoted prosecutor Christer B Jarlås denying reports that he intended to charge Peter Carlsson, calling the account fabricated and saying there was nothing new. [s-d307]
  - Qualification: The statement is not an acquittal or an established end to the investigation.

## Separate allegations about financial communications

- Analysis: May reporting about a book alleged tax and accounting investigations and criticised financial communications. The retained account says the Economic Crime Authority neither confirmed nor denied the alleged investigation. Carlsson responded that nothing showed a breach of directors’ or management’s creditor-related or company-law duties and that the investigation allegation was new to him. These book-based assertions are not official confirmation or findings against the board. [s-d222]
- Attributed: May 2026 reporting about a book alleged tax and accounting investigations and criticised Northvolt’s financial communications. The retained account says the Economic Crime Authority neither confirmed nor denied the alleged investigation. [s-d222]
  - Qualification: The book’s allegations and suggestions of possible offences are not official confirmation or findings of misconduct.
  - Response: Carlsson said nothing showed a failure of directors or management to fulfil creditor-related or company-law duties, and that the alleged Economic Crime Authority investigation was new information to him.

## Dated environmental disclosures

- Analysis: The company’s 2023 compliance note separately recorded five environmental noncompliance cases and SEK165,000 in fines. It described corrective work while identifying an Ett temperature issue awaiting an authority decision and a Labs lithium-discharge matter referred to a prosecutor without a decision at the report date. These corporate disclosures are distinct episodes, not findings against Carlsson personally. [s-d5]
- Documented: The 2023 report disclosed five environmental noncompliance cases and SEK 165,000 in fines. It said corrective work had been done, while an Ett wastewater-temperature matter awaited an authority decision and a Labs lithium-discharge matter had been referred to a prosecutor without a decision at the report date. [s-d5]
  - Qualification: The general summary of remedial action must be read with the more specific unresolved cases in the compliance note.

## The investigation did not treat every manager alike

- Analysis: The May 2026 report says two former middle managers had been removed as suspects while the investigation continued concerning Carlsson and another senior manager. That favourable development for those two individuals must not be lost in a broad account of the accident. Equally, it does not establish the result for other individuals or turn the later reported charging dispute into a conviction. [s-d270]
- Attributed: May 2026 reporting quoted the prosecutor confirming that two former middle managers were no longer suspects in the investigation of the fatal 2023 Skellefteå explosion, while the investigation continued concerning Carlsson and another former senior manager. [s-d270]
  - Qualification: The removal of those two suspects does not determine the position of the other individuals. The later prosecutor denial of the reported charging intention is preserved separately.
- Analysis: The Chapter 11 declaration also describes governance appointments during the financial crisis: Paul O’Donnell had joined Ett’s board, while the parent intended to appoint existing adviser Stefan Selig. The declaration’s distinction between a completed appointment and a proposed one is retained. Names in unrelated company registers are not joined to these individuals without sufficient identity evidence. [s-d182]
- Documented: The November 2024 Chapter 11 declaration says Northvolt Ett had appointed Paul O’Donnell as an independent director, and that Northvolt AB intended to appoint its existing board adviser Stefan Selig as an independent director. [s-d182]
  - Qualification: The parent appointment was a future intention in the declaration. A matching director name in another company register is not enough to extend this individual’s identity or career network.

## The company described remedial measures

- Analysis: Northvolt’s own annual report acknowledged two fatal accidents at Ett in 2023. After the incident involving its employee, it said production stopped for two weeks and that an internal investigation led to changes in training and routines for high-risk work. Those reported measures belong alongside the subsequent investigation; they do not establish that the measures were sufficient or determine any person’s liability. [s-d5]
- Attributed: In its 2023 annual report, Northvolt acknowledged two fatal accidents at Ett and said production was halted for two weeks after the accident involving its own employee. It reported an internal investigation and changes to training and routines for high-risk work. [s-d5]
  - Qualification: These are the company’s own remedial statements, not an independent finding that the measures were sufficient or that later criminal responsibility had been determined.
