# Steward Health Care: Chapter 11, plan confirmation and the remaining disputes

**Question.** What milestones occurred in the bankruptcy, and what remains unresolved in the retained record?

**Answer.** The filing, first-day requests, confirmation order and later administration are distinct milestones. Confirmation does not itself establish plan effectiveness or the resolution of every appeal and claim.

## What was listed for the first-day hearing

- Analysis: The first-day agenda scheduled an emergency hearing for 7 May 2024, covering debtor-in-possession financing, cash collateral, wages, cash management, critical suppliers and additional time for required schedules. [s-d116]
  - Qualification: An agenda records matters set for hearing, not their approval or the final financing terms.

## From the filing to confirmation and later administration

- Analysis: System and affiliated debtors filed Chapter 11 cases in the Southern District of Texas on 6 May 2024, led by case 24-90213. The first-day declaration reported approximately $1.2 billion of funded principal and $6.6 billion of long-term lease obligations, alongside substantial trade payables. John R. Castellano was chief restructuring officer; an independent transformation committee and investigation subcommittee oversaw restructuring and potential estate claims. A liquidation plan was confirmed on 25 July 2025. [s-d4] [s-d8] [s-d14] [s-d23] [s-d102] [s-d124] [s-d127] [s-d138] [s-d258]
  - Qualification: Joint administration is procedural and does not merge all debtor identities or liabilities. Debt principal, accrued interest, minimum-return obligations and future leases must not be summed a second time. Confirmation is distinct from a plan’s effective date: the July 2025 notice announced entry of the confirmation order and expressly contemplated a future Effective Date.
  - Response: Reporting on a February 2026 U.S. Trustee objection says the Trustee opposed closing 165 subsidiary cases, citing pending appeals, incomplete administration and an effective date then expected no earlier than the second half of 2027. That was the reported position at that time, not a verified October adjudication of those appeals.
  - Outcome: The retained docket records claims administration on 13 October 2026 and an October 6 agreed order resolving Stryker avoidance claims. It does not independently establish the final disposition of every confirmation appeal.
