the questionWhat did Tricolor's lenders lose, and what have they disclosed and done since?
1Charge-offs and reserves
analysisThe SEC says Tricolor's warehouse lenders together reserved for more than $500 million of losses on their loans and in public disclosures attributed the losses to "alleged fraudulent activity" at Tricolor, without naming the lenders in that passage. In September 2025 a trade publication, citing a news report, said that JPMorgan Chase & Co., Fifth Third Bancorp and Barclays PLC stood to lose hundreds of millions of dollars on Tricolor loans; those were expected, not final, losses. A banking trade publication reported on October 14, 2025 that JPMorgan Chase recorded a $170 million charge-off in the third quarter connected to Tricolor; its chief executive, Jamie Dimon, said "It is not our finest moment", and its chief financial officer, Jeremy Barnum, said wholesale charge-offs were slightly elevated by "a couple of instances of apparent fraud in certain secure lending facilities". JPMorgan's own filings on the charge are not retained. 1 2 3
analysisFifth Third Bancorp reported that on September 5, 2025 it had concluded that alleged external fraudulent activity at a commercial borrower of Fifth Third Bank, National Association, associated with an asset-backed finance loan of about $200 million, would result in a material impairment charge, which it estimated at $170 million to $200 million for the third quarter of 2025; its quarterly and annual reports for 2025 record a charge-off of $178 million and a specific allowance of $20 million on that fraud-related impairment. The filings do not name the borrower; a banking trade publication reported in October 2025 that Fifth Third was another large lender affected by Tricolor's collapse and connected the disclosure to it, and the link to Tricolor rests on that press attribution. The FDIC's BankFind record lists Fifth Third Bank, National Association as an active national bank (FDIC certificate 6672, OCC charter 25190), supervised by the OCC, with Fifth Third Bancorp as its holding company. 4 5 6 3 7
analysisOrigin Bancorp recorded net charge-offs of $28.4 million in the third quarter of 2025 on the Tricolor Holdings, LLC loan relationship because of suspected borrower fraud, with a $29.5 million increase in provision expense ($28.0 million for loans and $1.5 million for off-balance sheet commitments). For the full year it reported net charge-offs of $29.5 million on the relationship and a $29.6 million provision increase ($29.3 million for loans and $338,000 for off-balance sheet commitments), and said the Tricolor fraud reduced its diluted earnings per share of $2.40 by $0.77. The relationship was charged off in 2025 and the bank said it was pursuing all possible recovery outcomes; the annual report mentions no recoveries. Renasant Corporation's annual report for 2025 does not name Tricolor: it attributes the increase in its collateral-dependent loans to loans acquired with The First and to the migration of a large relationship resulting from a bankruptcy, without identifying the borrower, so it is not treated here as a statement about the Tricolor loan. 8 9 10
